What if I told you that 95% of the people that visit your website will never be back? That sucks.
You spend all this time (and money) creating an awesome website and online presence and then an overwhelming majority of the people you get to it just come read your content or watch your videos and then leave. It’s kind of like going on a date and then never getting called again.
You might be asking yourself “Is it me”? Well…yes it is you. Not really.
The truth is that people have a short attention span when they are online and even if they really liked your content they may get distracted and end up on another site or go back to Facebook and interacting with their friends.
If you think that this person was a good fit for you and you should go out again you should make sure that you stay connected so that they have a chance to see how awesome you are.
I’m using this dating comparison to try and explain how Facebook retargeting works and why it’s such an amazing tactic to add to your marketing strategy.
I am still amazed to see how many websites that sell products or services still don’t have retargeting/remarketing set up.
This one online marketing tactic is a no-brainer to me when I think of all of the things that you should be doing online.
I think that one reason everybody doesn’t have it set up is that they don’t understand how to properly set it up. You might not be technically inclined, or maybe you hear “place this code on your website” and you panic.
It’s understandable, your’e busy running your website and selling your services, your don’t have time to be fiddling with the code on your site. That’s what webmasters are for!
How Exactly Does Facebook Retargeting Work?
Facebook retargeting works by using code that Facebook generates through your ads manager. This code is placed on your site and everyone that lands on a page with this code is placed into an audience list within your ads manager.
This code or pixel places a cookie on your visitor’s browser and the next time they go to Facebook they can bee showed an ad.
This type of marketing tactic isn’t new. Google and other online advertising networks have been utilizing this for years.
The reason I like Facebook retargeting so much is that people spend a lot of time on Facebook and showing up in your audience’s newsfeed are more personal feel to it than them seeing you on the side of Huffington Post.
The Best ROI of Any Ad Spend
I have worked on countless Facebook campaigns for clients and the number one tactic that produced the highest ROI of anything we tried was on retargeting.
The cost to get a lead and the cost to acquire an actual paying customer was always cheaper with retargeting.
Some Ways You Can Use Retargeting
There are a lot of ways you can put Facebook retargeting to work for you. Here are just a few:
1) Target everyone that visits your site and get them to come back and sign up for your lead magnet.
2) Target everyone that signed up for your lead magnet to register for a webinar.
3) Remind everyone that registered for the webinar to attend webinar.
4) Place ads in front of everyone that registered for webinar but didn’t attend to watch the replay.
5) Show ads for the product you pitched on the webinar to everyone who registered.
6) Upload your email list to Facebook and use retargeting to show them ads for your products or services.
These are just a few of the ways you can put retargeting to work for you. I can literally think of dozens of ways to us it.
Who Should Use Retargeting?
The easy answer would be anyone that sells anything online.
If you have just a little traffic going to your website then you could benefit from retargeting. You have to have some traffic going to your site in order for retargeting to kick in, but this can be easily achieved through consistent blogging or even Facebook ads.
Just about every business that I can think of that offers any type of service or product online could benefit from their potential customers seeing them pop up on their Facebook newsfeed almost daily.
